PREVIEW...CD-ROM and SUBSCRIPTIONS
FORMAL POOLS and their GARDENS.

PLEASE NOTE...SOME OF THE WORDS IN THESE PREVIEW BOXES
HAVE BEEN DELETED FROM THE ORIGINAL TEXT ON THE CD-ROM. AND ARE SHOWN LIKE THIS...XXXXXXXXXXXX.

ALSO NOTE THAT MOST OF THE PICTURES ARE NOT IN THE SAME SEQUENCE AS THEY APPEAR ON THE CD-ROM. AND IN MOST CASES THEY DO NOT RELATE TO EACH OTHER IN THESE PREVIEWS.

The fountain in this case is in the form of a lead fish.
Notice how the reclaimed stone of the new feature exactly matches the mellow walls of the house.

Full details about how to build natural stone walls for a wide variety of uses both natural and formal...follows in the next subject.

Any Formal Feature needs a pool...and whatever the size of the pool the construction methods are the same.

As I said earlier the hole that you dig has to include XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
So here's an example...the water surface is within a X' circle and the edgings are X" wide. So that's
X' + X" + X"...so the hole you dig in this case has to be X'X" in diameter.
You then XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX...

Now this is...a (Formal) Canal and very boring Formal Canal it looks too!

But when the fountains are turned on and the plants are in full bloom it's fantastic...so then the ordinary shape is transformed (made interesting), by the fountains and the plants. Also it has an interesting edge to it.

Do not create something like this if you have a wind problem...that's wind as in...blowing the water out of the canal!
Strong wind will blow the water from a fountain very easily onto the edge of the pool, or even carry it completely out of the pool, which will result in a water loss.
So design your pool large enough so that when the wind blows, all of the water stays in the pool...otherwise you have to fit an automatic top up system.

Here's a Raised Formal Pool...and coming up, in the next chapter...I'll be showing you how to build Formal Pools and Features of all shapes and sizes.
